MTV Launches New Studio to Remake Fan Favorites

MTV is cool with kids again.

The cable channel has announced the launch of MTV Studios, a new unit focused on developing never-before-seen content and re-imagining classic hits like The Real World and TRL. According to a press release from the company, MTV Studios will produce updated versions of popular series from MTV’s library in addition to new titles.

So far, MTV Studios has confirmed the following shows are slated for production:

“DARIA & JODIE” (wt)

The iconic animated franchise is reinvented through the eyes of heroine Daria Morgendorffer and one of her closest friends Jodie Landon. These two smart young women take on the world, with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender and race.

Writer: Grace Edwards (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Loosely Exactly Nicole, Inside Amy Schumer)
Production Company: MTV Studios

“AEON FLUX”

This cult anime classic is back for a live action remake, as the badass heroine assassin Aeon Flux teams up with a group of biohacking rebels in the not too distant dystopian future to battle a brutally repressive regime and save humanity.

Executive Producers: Jeff Davis (“Teen Wolf,” “Criminal Minds”) and Gale Anne Hurd (“The Walking Dead,” “Fear the Walking Dead”)
Production Company: MTV Studios

“MADE”

The groundbreaking, Emmy-winning life makeover series returns. In a world of 2D Instagram transformations, MADE pairs talented young underdogs with experts for face to face coaching for total life, real life reinventions.

Production Company: MTV Studios

“THE VALLEY” (wt)

In the spirit of “The Hills” and “The City,” this new show follows a group of 20 somethings in a classic coming of age docu-series featuring first loves, relationships and life decisions – with a twist. This group of young people is living in “The Valley” of Nogales, Arizona, a town along the border of the United States and Mexico. This is the real life story of friends who are growing up on the edge of two countries, two cities as they share one Valley, their youth and common bond.

Production Company: MTV Studios

“MTV’S STRAIGHT UP GHOSTED”

While social media has connected the world more than ever, it has also undercut our ability to deeply connect and communicate. Today, critical relationship-ending conversations and confrontations have faded into digital dialogue or worse “ghosting.” This series explores real stories of real people who vanished by blocking them, and unlocks the reality and uncomfortable truth to satisfy the ultimate question–why did you leave me?

Production Company: MTV Studios

MTV Studios is one of many new projects MTV President Chris McCarthy has introduced during his tenure.

(VH1)

Since his executive appointment in 2016, McCarthy has pivoted the channel’s creative direction (and lackluster ratings) by pulling scripted shows like The Shannara Chronicles in favor of budget-friendly reality shows like Jersey Shore Family Vacation. His approach has clearly resonated with fans: Jersey Shore Family Vacation’s first episode debuted as cable’s most-watched reality premiere since 2012.

According to Nielsen reports, MTV is now the fastest-growing network on TV with viewership up 21% year-over-year in prime time and more than 350 million social media followers. With MTV Studios, McCarthy is prepared to accelerate this growth with viewers reporting,

“MTV has the biggest collection of hit youth franchises that spans more than three decades of content and over 200 titles, part of which have fueled our resurgence. With MTV Studios, we are for the first time ever opening up this vault beyond our own platforms to reimagine the franchises with new partners.”

Let’s hope Celebrity Deathmatch makes the new studio’s lineup.

Mark Cuban may be out, but consumers are in.

Amazon has announced that it is now an official retail partner for “Shark Tank” products.

The new Amazon Launchpad Shark Tank Collection highlights products seen on “Shark Tank,” including the Hatch Baby, Third Wave Water and Stasher, among others.

This collaboration, which coincides with the premiere of “Shark Tank” season 10, provides an opportunity for successfully-funded Shark Tank startups and entrepreneurs to launch and showcase their products on Amazon.com. “Shark Tank” season 10 airs on Sundays at 9pm Eastern on ABC.

The new Amazon hub built around “Shark Tank” products allows users to see products by how many sharks invested, by guest sharks, and several other interesting data points.

“We are thrilled to be working with the popular ‘Shark Tank’ franchise, highlighting products from startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses. The Amazon Launchpad program is all about empowering creators and inventors, enabling them to reach hundreds of millions of customers. By teaming up with ‘Shark Tank,’ we are making it fun and easy for fans of the show to discover a wide variety of unique innovations and cutting-edge products.” – Jim Adkins, Vice President, Amazon

More than 70 products that successfully received funding from Sharks during seasons 1-9 are now available for purchase on Amazon.com. Products from season 10 and beyond will be featured in the Amazon Launchpad Shark Tank Collection in the future. All startups and entrepreneurs that Sharks have invested in will be considered for the Amazon Launchpad program. In addition, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is offering a $15,000 credit for cloud computing services to each eligible “Shark Tank” entrepreneur.

“For the first time ever, ‘Shark Tank’ has a store on Amazon.com dedicated to helping our entrepreneurs scale their businesses and highlight top products from the show. We are excited for the Amazon Launchpad Shark Tank Collection to bring products from our entrepreneurs to retail for customers and fans of the series.” – Barbara Corcoran, Shark

The Amazon Launchpad program offers a number of resources to entrepreneurs and small companies, including marketing services, exclusive promotions, and onboarding support.

“Our first big break as a company came with ‘Shark Tank.’ It got us the attention we needed to attract a wide audience. Working with Amazon Launchpad feels like our second big break. We’re lucky to work with a team that understands the unique challenges facing entrepreneurs and who specifically supports and provides us with what we need to grow our business.” – Ann Weiss, CEO, Hatch Baby

“Shark Tank,” which is based on the Japanese “Dragons’ Den” format created by Nippon Television Network Corporation, is produced by MGM Television in association with Sony Pictures Television.

“2001: A Space Odyssey” Coming to IMAX For the First Time

Stanley Kubrick’s classic is coming back.

Warner Bros. is releasing 2001: A Space Odyssey in IMAX theaters in honor of the film’s 50th anniversary. The film will premiere in 350 IMAX theaters across North America for one week, beginning on August 24th. This is the first time the film will available to view on the largest possible screen.

Widely considered among the greatest films of the 20th century, 2001: A Space Odyssey was originally released on April 4, 1968, igniting the imaginations of both critics and audiences. With the film, Kubrick redefined the limits of moviemaking, using photomechanical special effects achieved within the camera.

“I felt it was necessary to make this film in such a way that every special effects shot in it would be completely convincing – something that had never before been accomplished in a motion picture.” – Stanley Kubrick

Kubrick was one of the first filmmakers to use front projection, a technique where photography is projected onto a reflective surface from the front of the set. Of the film’s $10.5 million budget, Kubrick expended $6.5 million on special effects alone. A cult-favorite of both critics and fans alike, 2001: A Space Odyssey cemented his legacy as one of the most revolutionary and influential motion picture directors of all time.

(Warner Bros.)

As part of the week-long IMAX release, four theaters will showcase the feature on 70mm film: AMC Universal Citywalk IMAX, Universal City, AMC Lincoln Square IMAX, New York City, AMC Metreon IMAX, San Francisco, and Ontario Place Cinesphere IMAX, Toronto. The IMAX 70mm film print was created from the recently released “unrestored” 70mm print—a true photochemical film recreation struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative with no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits. All other IMAX theaters will show a brand new 4K restoration of the film with Laser and IMAX Xenon projection formats.

Tickets for the IMAX showing go on sale today. Check out more information here and to find a showing near you.
